Propolis a resinous material collected by the
hivebees from the opening buds of various trees. Propolis is a sticky resin that
seeps from the buds of some trees and oozes from the bark of other trees,
chiefly conifers. The bees gather propolis, sometimes called bee glue, and hold
it home in their pollen baskets. They blend it with wax flakes secreted from
special glands on their abdomens.

Propolis also contains small amounts of pollen and other bee materials. The bees use propolis to guard the hive against bacteria or viral infection and dangerous
toxins. Beehives are a almost sterile atmosphere due to the use of Propolis by
the bees. Propolis is used to slickly line the interior of brood cells in
grounding for the queen’’s laying of eggs, a most important procedure. With its
antiseptic properties, this propolis lining insures a hospital-clean environment
for the rearing of brood.

Propolis is a reddish brown wax-like resinous essence Propolis is medicinal
marvel from the beehive. Propolis offers antiseptic, antibiotic, antibacterial,
antifungal, and even antiviral property. Propolis demonstrates strong
antimicrobial properties against assorted bacterial and fungal infestations.
Other properties of propolis include acting as a local anesthetic, reducing
spasms, healing gastric ulcers, and strengthening capillaries. Propolis can be
used by humans internally or externally. Propolis has been justly called
Nature’’s premier preventive.

Propolis is now considered a significant part of dietetics and a natural
treatment by the World Health Organization. Propolis is rich in vitamins. High
in B-complex vitamins, propolis contains prominent quantities of vitamin C, E
and Provitamin A. It also contains minerals and trace elements such as calcium,
magnesium, iron, zinc, silica, potassium, phosphorous, manganese, cobalt and
copper.

Propolis Benefits

Pregnant women and nursing mothers should avoid using propolis supplements.
Oral propolis may reason allergic reactions in individuals who have allergies to
pollen-producing plants or evergreens.

Propolis Dosage

As a dietary supplement, take 2 capsules 1-3 times daily.

For More Health Articles Visit: http://www. getnutri. com/articles/default. asp

http://www. getnutri. com/Propolis. htmlhttp://www. getnutri. com/articles/default. asp

Juandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13996393031641325156noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2994244242615338587.post-8482082689536351692009-12-21T19:20:00.001-08:002009-12-26T09:56:11.897-08:00Nature's Antibiotic - Bee PropolisWouldn’t it be great if there were a natural antibiotic that would not cause antibiotic resistance? Wouldn’t it also be great if you could take this natural antibiotic and get other health benefits, without having to worry about some of the nasty side effects of prescription antibiotics? And if you could get antiviral benefits, that would be really great, wouldn’t it?

Ladies and gentlemen, introducing…bee propolis!

Bee propolis is the product is not exactly a biological product of bees. They collect a resinous tree sap and mix it with honey back at the hive, and that’s propolis. They use it to seal their homes, the way we would use a caulking gun to seal ours.

You may never have heard of bee propolis, but it has long been known to provide significant health benefits. The most important of these benefits may be propolis’ use as an antibiotic.

Why would bees need to make antibiotics?

We know bees are among the most efficient creatures on earth. They use everything they make, and they don’t make anything they don’t need. So why would they need antibiotics?

While this is not household knowledge, any beekeeper can tell you that bees are very, very vulnerable to infections, both bacterial and viral. Entire hives can be destroyed by an infection running rampant. To survive, bees must create an antibiotic, antiviral substance to protect themselves.

Most people need to be convinced of the effectiveness of bee propolis, and there are several studies, on various aspects of bee propolis’ healing properties, which back up the claims of bee product supporters.

In a Chinese study, researchers found that propolis, specifically the sinapic, isoferulic, and cafeeic acides it contains, inhibied the growth of W. aureus. In Europe, ethanol extracts from bee propolis had a “marked synergistic effect” on the anti-staph effectiveness of streptomycin and cloxacyllin and a less marked but still noticeable effect on several other antibiotics.

The antiviral properties of propolis are its greatest strength, and remarkable in terms of health, because viruses are completely unaffected by antibiotics, and can cause severe illness which are treatable, medically, only by a few prescription antivirals which are reserved for extreme cases. Sufferers of the common cold and the flu may find bee propolis very beneficial in shortening the duration of their symptoms and relieving their illness.

Bee propolis has a lot of functions in wellness, in addition to its antibiotic and antiviral properties. Some of its elements are free-radical scavengers. It has anti-inflammatory properties. It can prevent blood clots, and is helpful with allergies.

Bee propolis is an important heatlh supplement which can fight infections, reduce allergic reactions, and generally promote a healthy body and immune system. It is no wonder, considering how hard bees work, that they would create one of the most remarkable health supplements known, but we, as humans, are lucky to have bees inhabiting our world. Though they are of course making their own world better, and don’t even think about us unless we bother them, they are good neighbors. And the honey is delicious.

Bee Propolis Natural 500 Mg, 100 Capsules, by Good'N Natural

Todd Alexander is health writer for Earthturns. com.
EarthTurns Copyright 2006
Juandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13996393031641325156noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2994244242615338587.post-46504423496908933542009-12-21T09:33:00.001-08:002009-12-26T10:14:31.995-08:00Honey, Bee Pollen & Propolis, Royal Jelly for Health and Healing
We are all familiar with honey as a valuable substitute for refined sugar or chemical additives which have been shown to be neurotoxins. We often are unaware of using the incredible nutritional value of honey for a variety of health benefits beyond honeys being a natural sweetener.

Honey is a natural glucose and fructose sugar that is readily recognized and used for energy by our bodies. Honey contains mineral such as magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium chlorine, sulphur, iron and phosphate. Honey also contains small amounts of copper, iodine and zinc. Honey contains vitamins B1, B2, B6, B5 and B3.

Honey is often used to help us build immunity to pollens that are responsible for allergic reaction. Honey, because of its ability to attract water, is also used as a skin moisturizer and well as a hair conditioner when mixed with olive oil. Since Honey has powerful antimicrobial qualities, it can soothe raw tissue such as we experience with a sore throat. Honey is a natural anti-inflammatory agent containing phytochemicals that helps heal wounds by killing bacteria, virus, and fungus that cannot live in honey thus preventing infection.

Honey is being used in Europe and the Middle East to treat ulcers and burns. The treatment of burns with honey reduces pain and result in healing with minimal scaring of skin. Honey reduces the swelling of wounds and is used by our body as building material for new tissue as honey actually traps moisture and oxygen around the wound that is vital for healing and tissue generation.

Honey has sustaining blood sugar concentrations that many athletes use for endurance training as honey maintains and stores muscle glycogen as a readily available, metabolized fuel. Honey promotes muscle tissue repair. Honey acts as a superior carbohydrate that helps athletes give a peak performance.

Honey contains small amounts of resins found in propolis. Propolis is used by bees to build and maintain their hives. Propolis makes the hive safe from bacteria and other micro-organisms. Propolis is anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal. Propolis contains phytonutrients which have been shown to have cancer preventing and anti-tumor properties. Propolis is contained in small amounts in honey and is available in concentrated supplement form.

Honey contains bee pollen. Bee pollen has been shown to correct the chemical imbalance that often leads to weight gain. Therefore, bee pollen has proven to be a valuable aid for weight loss. Been pollen improves our metabolism, i. e. the rate at which our bodies burn fat. Bee pollen dissolves and flushes fat cells from our bodies because of the high amounts of lecithin it contains.

Bee pollen helps us reduce our cravings for food. Bee pollen has been shown to lower cholesterol levels. Bee pollen is also beneficial for our sexual health. Studies have shown that bee pollen helps restore the health of female reproductive system and relief from the discomfort of PMS. Bee pollen has been shown to help increase mens sperm count, help maintain erection, and prevent prostate problems. Bee pollen has been shown to improve our immune systems and remove toxins from our bodies. In addition, many athletes use bee pollen for endurance, strength and stamina. Many of us use bee pollen to help improve mental clarity. Bee pollen is available in concentrated supplement form.

Royal jelly is the only food source for the queen bee. The queen bee lives up to forty times longer than the other bees. Royal jelly contains large amounts of protein and all eight of the essential amino acids that our bodies cannot manufacture. Royal jelly is an antioxidant that combats free radicals. Royal jelly contains large amounts of natural hormones e. g. pheromones, large amounts of amino acids and essential amino acids, B vitamins, vitamins A, C, D and E. Royal jelly contains essential fatty acids and acetylcholine, a natural neurotransmitter. Royal jelly contains sterols, phosphorus compounds nucleic acids and traces of calcium copper potassium, silicon and sulfur.

Royal jelly helps lower cholesterol, promotes mental alertness and clarity, reduces dizziness and buzzing in the ears and improves energy levels thus eliminating fatigue. Royal Jelly has been shown to reduce anxiety and depression because of its high amounts of acetylcholine that is a natural neurotransmitter. Many of us report that it helps slow down the ageing process, improves vitality and energy levels. Royal jelly improves the conditions of our skin and improves the strength and condition of our nails and hair. Royal jelly contains lipids and carbohydrates and aspartic acid that facilitates growth and repair of cells and tissue. Royal jell also has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. Royal jelly is available in concentrated supplemental form.

The next time we use honey, we can experience and extra satisfaction beyond taste, knowing the miraculous and amazing health benefits we are receiving. We can receive even more health and healing benefit from taking advantage of the availability of bee pollen and propolis and royal jelly in supplemental form. We need to find ways to protect our bee population and feel deep gratitude for the many gifts of health and nutrition they have provided us.

Jenny has more than twenty years experience with all natural health care products. It is derived from honeybees and is extracted directly from the surrounds of a beehive. Its name means "defense of a city" from the Greek language.

The compound carries anti-microbial properties that can be beneficial to the human immune system the way that it is beneficial to the beehive. For example, bees use the compound to avoid bacterial infection by covering intruders' carcasses with it to avoid putrefaction as they decay.

This compound is also present in AFC. Propolis is a widely used medicinal compound since antiquity, with both Roman and Greek solders using it to treat wounds and prevent infection. Aristotle himself attested to its effectiveness and endorsed the utilization of the chemical to treat infections during his time.

Propolis was even used as medicine for wounds together with vaseline during the Boer War. In modern times, the herbal compound gained popularity once again in Europe especially in the former Soviet Union and three of its states when they used the drug to treat health problems in their jurisdictions. Japan also realized the potency of the compound in the 1980's and is now the largest importer of the product in the whole world with a preference for products made from Brazil including AFC.

Raw propolis is produced worldwide. All of these variants are similar when it comes to biological composition. However, Brazilian and European propolis have different chemical structures from each other. This is because the bees that make the products use different types of plants for producing the resin to make the compound. In European variants, flavonoids are observed to be the major constituent while Brazilian versions have poyprenylated benzophones dominating their chemical profile. This is owing to the fact that European bees derived resin from poplars which are non-existent in the tropical South American countries. The

Brazilian green propolis is the most famous among the world. This is because the green variant is easy to process. Mechanical mills can easily convert the compound into powder to be mixed with their products. It is also said that the Brazilian bees are particularly more productive in creating the compound for their hives compared to other bees in other countries. This is something, although there is no conclusive evidence, that experts are attributing to the Africanization of the Brazilian bees after African queen bees were let loose accidentally from a laboratory in Sao Paulo.

The products sold under the AFC brand have many medicinal uses. Since the raw materials on which the products are based have very high antioxidant attributes, the intake of these products stimulates the immune system and boosts its ability to fight foreign microbes and bacteria in the body. AFC has intended these products for use with different ailments including common ones like cough, flu, cold, tonsillitis, laryngitis and herpes, among others. The raw material for these products is extracted from bee farms in Minas Gerais, Brazil which has little to no chemical pollution, making AFC's products virtually safe and free from chemical influences that might harm the body instead of helping it.

Polenectar Brazil Green Bee Propolis 60 Softgels

Are you interested in the medicinal properties of propolis? I don't say that outer treatment is bad, it's just not optimal.

This is my most recommended product for Bee Propolis :

Natural antibiotic

Helps boost immune system function

Contains all vitamins except Vitamin K

Loaded with flavonoids, powerful antioxidants

Shown to be active against bacteria, viruses and other micro-organisms

Bee Propolis – Loaded with Nutrients for Immune Support

In addition to honey, bees also produce two products which have been used in alternative medicine for centuries, bee pollen and propolis. Propolis is less well-known than pollen but offers important potential health benefits.

Propolis is a combination of resin collected from tree bark and leaves and pollen, wax, and nectar. The resulting sticky substance is used in the hive to seal it and caulk holes and cracks. It can also be found at the entrance where it helps remove micro-organisms from the bee’s body as it enters the hive helping protect the colony from potentially debilitating invasions.

Propolis’ medicinal properties have been known for over 2,000 years. Hippocrates used it to treat wounds. There are reports that the Russian army used it to treat wounds on the battlefield during World War II.

Today many people prize propolis as a powerful, natural antibiotic. While it will not replace prescription antibiotics, it can help provide an added boost for the immune system and stimulate the formation of antibodies.

All Vitamins plus AntioxidantsPropolis is packed with nutrients.

It contains all the vitamins except for Vitamin K. It also contains bioflavonoids, calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc. In all, scientists have identified more than 180 compounds in propolis. Propolis has been found to be active against bacteria, viruses, and other micro-organisms.

The flavonoids in propolis are powerful antioxidants. They help account, in part, for propolis’ antibiotic and antiviral properties. Antioxidants help eliminate damaging free radicals from the body. Propolis is also believed to have some anti-inflammatory properties.

Interested...? Multiple laboratory, animal, and human studies show that it may have some mild anti-infective effects, possibly due to chemical components known as flavonoids. In laboratory studies, flavonoids have been shown to slow down or stop the division of bacterial cells. Propolis is believed to have similar inhibitory effects on viral and fungal cells. Some research suggests that it may block the entry of viral cells into normal cells, effectively stopping the viral cells from replicating. Propolis may also increase the anti-infective effects of some drugs or other herbals when taken in combination. For example, results from a recent study involving more than 400 Israeli children seem to show that a commercial combination product containing propolis, echinacea, and vitamin C helped not only to shorten and lessen the severity of colds and other infections of the respiratory tract, but also to prevent them in some cases. However, propolis generally is not as effective as prescription anti-infective medications.

Orally, propolis may also have a number of additional effects. A chemical that it contains--caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE--may interfere with the formation of substances, such as prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), that promote inflammation in the body. This possible effect may help to relieve inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. Additionally, results from some animal studies also show that propolis may enhance the function of the immune system, potentially strengthening the body's ability to resist infection and inflammation. In other studies, propolis has shown some activity against cancer cells. In test tube and animal studies, it appeared to cause some types of cancer cells to disintegrate. It may also increase the activity of some anticancer drugs and/or decrease the side effects associated with many anticancer drugs. Several other laboratory studies found that propolis may protect the liver from damage by alcohol or environmental toxins. These potential uses of propolis have not been well-studied in humans and the unpredictable composition of propolis makes reproducing the study results difficult.

Preliminary laboratory evidence also shows that propolis may have some effects on the heart. The anti-inflammatory effects of CAPE may help to prevent or lessen general inflammation that may play a role in heart disease. Additionally, in some studies, propolis helped to lower high blood pressure and regulate heart rate in rats. Another study showed that CAPE may have reduced heart rhythm abnormalities and possibly prevented some heart damage in an animal model of heart attacks. Much more research is needed before propolis can be recommended for any heart condition, however.

Topically, propolis has been used in folk medicine to treat skin wounds. Because propolis has a sticky consistency, it was used to protect raw skin before bandages were available. Its mild anti-infective properties may have promoted healing. In a recent study of individuals with second-degree burns, a propolis cream and a prescription burn cream produced about equal results in preventing infection, but the propolis cream promoted earlier healing and seemed to decrease inflammation more than the prescription. In animals, eye drops containing propolis have been studied to reduce inflammation and promote healing of injuries to the cornea of the eye. Also studied recently, an alcohol-based mouth rinse of propolis has shown promise for eliminating oral bacteria that may contribute to tooth decay and gum disease. It has also been used to prevent infections after oral surgery. A recent laboratory study found that it may be less damaging than commonly used antimicrobial agents to normal cells in the mouth. Propolis may have additional value for the temporary storage of teeth that have been knocked out accidentally. More research is needed to prove or disprove all these topical effects, however.

When should I be careful taking it?

Individuals who have asthma should avoid using propolis because the chemicals or contaminants in it may provoke asthma attacks.

Although no cases of cross reactions have been reported, individuals with allergies to bee stings are advised to avoid propolis due to possibly heightened sensitivity to any bee products.

Precautions

Oral propolis may cause allergic reactions in individuals who have allergies to pollen-producing plants or evergreens. Since propolis may originate in nearly any part of the world, the pollens in it may come from a variety of plants, not just the plants in the immediate area where the product is purchased. Therefore, individuals with allergies to any type of plant pollen should use caution when taking propolis by mouth.

What side effects should I watch for?

One case has been reported of a cancer patient whose kidneys suddenly failed after the patient took propolis for about two weeks. When propolis was stopped, kidney function recovered partially. Whether contaminants may have contributed is not known.

Mouth sores from oral propolis or skin rashes from topical propolis have been reported by individuals who were allergic to bee stings. Rashes have also been reported among bee-keepers and others who come into direct contact with propolis or products that contain it. While a rash is most likely to occur at the places where propolis touches the skin, some individuals have developed a general rash on parts of the body that were not in direct contact with propolis.

What interactions should I watch for?

No interactions have been reported between propolis and prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs, other herbal supplements, or foods. However, the composition of propolis and possible contaminants in it may vary dramatically, even between batches collected from the same bee hive. Additionally, few reliable studies of propolis have been conducted, therefore its possible interactions with drugs, foods, and other dietary supplements are not understood completely.

Some interactions between herbal products and medications can be more severe than others. The best way for you to avoid harmful interactions is to tell your doctor and/or pharmacist what medications you are currently taking, including any over-the-counter products, vitamins, and herbals. For specific information on how propolis interacts with drugs, other herbals, and foods and the severity of those interactions, please use our Drug Interactions Checker to check for possible interactions.

Should I take it?

Honeybees are found in nearly every part of the world. Although they are believed to have evolved from tropical wasps millions of years ago, different species of bees have adapted for cool areas. Essential to the reproduction of crops as well as to wild plants, bees are often kept in artificial hives near orchards and farm fields. In addition to collecting nectar and pollen from blooming plants, most bees gather the sticky sap from poplar or evergreen trees. Bees process the sap into propolis, which they use along with the wax they produce to make, defend, and repair their hives. Although honey is the main commercial product that humans harvest from bee hives, other bee products such as wax, propolis, and royal jelly are also collected for human use.

Propolis consists mainly of a sticky resin, which is highly likely to be contaminated with pollen, bee's wax, dust, and other materials depending on the climate, the geographic location of the bee hives, the predominant vegetation in the area, and any environmental pollutants where the bee hives are located. Propolis may have been used by prehistoric humans who suffered bee stings while raiding wild hives for honey. Over the centuries since then, it has been included in folk medicine--usually for topical application to the skin--in most parts of the world. Today, propolis may be included in cosmetics and in health products, such as shampoo and toothpaste.

Dosage and Administration
Oral propolis is available as capsules, extracts, powders, tablets, and other forms. No dosing recommendations are available, and the composition of propolis varies considerably. In general, it is about half evergreen or poplar resin with high percentages of wax and pollen. Actual components depend on the type of bees that produced the propolis, the plants in the vicinity, and the location where it originated. Propolis may contain traces of impurities such as pesticides or environmental pollutants. Individuals who decide to use propolis should purchase a commercial product and follow the directions on the package. Only experienced bee-keepers should try to collect propolis from bee hives.

Topical forms of propolis include creams, lotions, ointments, and even a spray. Generally, they may be applied as often as needed or as often as directed by the manufacturer of the specific product purchased. A fairly large percentage of individuals have sensitivities to contact with propolis, however; so it should be discontinued if itching, pain, redness, or swelling develop at the site of application.

Summary
Propolis may be taken orally to treat various kinds of infections. It is also being studied for anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and liver protective effects. Topical propolis is used mainly for treating minor to moderate skin injuries. It may also help to heal eye injuries and prevent bacterial diseases of the mouth.

Risks
Propolis may cause asthma attacks in individuals who have asthma. It may also provoke allergy symptoms in individuals who are allergic to bee stings, evergreen resin, or plant pollens.

Side Effects
The only side effects known to be associated with propolis are irritations of the skin or mucous membranes where it is applied.

Interactions
No interactions have been identified between propolis and drugs, herbal products, or foods.

Last Revised July 26, 2007

Content source:
http://www.drugdigest.org/DD/DVH/HerbsWho/0,3923,4068|Propolis,00.html

http://www.helpinternational.co.uk

Juandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13996393031641325156noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2994244242615338587.post-18215372457718147262008-09-04T08:20:00.000-07:002008-09-04T08:26:03.567-07:00Propolis Skin Cream
Mother Nature's antibacterial companion Propolis Skin Cream is a composite of biological substance produced by honey Bees as a natural antibiotic that may accelerate the regeneration of skin tissue damaged by sun exposure or burns. They do it by collecting resin from trees and plants, taking it back to the hive where they work upon it, transforming it into the highly complex chemical mix we know as propolis.

The word Propolis is believed to have been coined by Aristotle who identified how propolis was used to protect and defend the hive. Propolis(from the Greek) means 'Before the City' or 'Defender of the City'.

The bees not only use propolis as a building material and structural defence mechanism but their health is maintained as a result of its immune system enhancing properties. Propolis forms the bees' external immune defence system, making the beehive one of the most sterile environments known to nature.

There are over 180 different chemicals in propolis which vary according to the type of bees collecting it, the climatic zone, the local trees and plants and even the time of day it is collected. Effectively the bees select and collect from the local environment all the products they need to stay well .

If a mouse or large insect invades the hive the bees can kill it but cannot remove it. They prevent the corpse from becoming a source of disease in the hive by coating the body with propolis. By mummifying the mouse or insect in this way the source of infection is sealed off from the hive. They use this material much the way people use caulk: to seal their homes. Chemically, propolis is exceedingly complex and contains a rich variety of potent terpenes and benzoic, caffeic, cinnamic, and phenolic acids. It's also high in flavonoids, which by themselves may account for many of the benefits attributed to propolis-and some researchers refer to propolis as a type of flavonoid.

One of the most significant medical journal articles described how the caffeic acids in propolis and honey might prevent colon cancer, which kills some 60,000 Americans each year. Chinthalapally V. Rao, Ph.D., of the American health Foundation, Valhalla, N.Y., reported in Cancer Research (Sept.15,1993; 53:1482-88) that these caffeic acids prevented the formation of precancerous tissue in rats after they were exposed to cancer-causing chemicals.

Most medical articles, however, still point to the value of propolis as a powerful, natural antibiotic. That doesn't mean eating propolis will let you throw away your antibiotics - only that you may not need them quite as often.

Why would bees need substances with broad antibacterial and antiviral properties? Any beekeeper will tell you the answer. Bees are very susceptible to bacterial and viral infections, which can destroy hives the way the bubonic plague ravaged Europe in the 17th century.

Two medical journal articles document the activity of propolis specifically against Staphylococcus aureus, the bacterium that causes dangerous and often deadly surgical infections, blood poisoning, and a type of pneumonia. Five to 10 percent of all patients hospitalized in the United States develop such infections, and S. aureus has become resistant to all but one pharmaceutical antibiotic.

In a Chinese study, researchers found that extracts of propolis - specifically, sinapic, isoferulic, and caffeic acids - inhibited the growth of S. aureus (Qiao Z, China Journal of Chinese Materi Medica, Aug. 1991;16:481-2). A European study reported that ethanol extracts from propolis had a "marked synergistic effect" on the anti-staph activity of two antibiotics, streptomycin and cloxacillin, and a moderate effect on several others (Krol W, Arzneimittel-Forschung, May 1993;43:607-9).

Another scientific investigation discovered that propolis inhibited the activity of several streptococcal bacteria species that cause dental caries.Japanese researchers reported that propolis-fed laboratory fats had far fewer caries than those given a regular diet. Propolis protected specifically against Streptococcus mutans and several other strep species (Ikeno K, Caries research, 1991;25:347-51). These strep species are closely related to the germ that causes strep throat.

Propolis works against bacteria in several ways. One study reported that it prevented bacterial cell division and also broke down bacterial walls and cytoplasm, which is how some prescription antibiotics work (Takaisi-KikuniNB, Planta Medica, June 1994;60:222-7).

Perhaps more remarkable is that propolis acts against viruses, which antibiotics do not. A number of medical journal reports have discussed the role of propolisin fighting upper respiratory infections, such as those caused by the common cold and influenza viruses (Focht J, Arzneimittel-Forschung, Aug. 1993;43:921-3). Other investigators have reported that the cinnamic acid extracts of propolis prevent viruses from reproducing, but they worked best when used during the entire infection (Serkedjieva J, Journal of Natural Products, March 1992;55:294-302).

Underpinning many of the benefits of propolis is that some of its components, like the flavonoids and ethanols, function as antioxidant free-radical scavengers. A study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology (Jan. 1994;21:9-13)noted that some of the antioxidant phenols in propolis functioned similarly to vitamin E. In another article, researchers described that propolis had anti-inflammatory properties and that it could also prevent blood clots(Drugs Under Experimental & Clinical Research, 1993; 19:197-203).

Propolis consists mainly of specific tree resins collected by honeybees. Bees use propolis like putty to seal cracks and openings in the hive, strengthen combs and seal brood cells. Propolis also helps sterilize the hive--the resins protect both trees and bees from infections.11 Most research has been conducted on propolis from European and Eurasian forests, where the source trees are predominantly poplars but also beech, birch, chestnut and several conifer species.12

More than 180 compounds have been identified in propolis, and many are biologically active.11 Flavonoids are abundant, including apigenin, galangin, kaempferol, luteolin, pinocembrin, pinostrobin and quercitin, all of which are anti-inflammatory, spasmolytic, antiallergenic, antioxidant and/or antimutagenic.13 Propolis is uniquely rich in the caffeic acid phenethyl ester, which in animal studies has inhibited cancer growth14 and reduced inflammation as effectively as drugs.15

Propolis also contains organic acids and their derivatives as well as terpenoids. These constituents contribute antibiotic, antifungal and antiviral effects.11,13,16-18

In cultures, propolis inhibits the growth of various viruses and fungi including herpes, influenza, rota, candida and aspergillus.16,19,20 Many bacteria are also affected, including Clostridium spp., Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. Propolis is active against bacteria isolated from people with upper respiratory infections, including penicillin-resistant strains.21

Propolis potentiates pharmaceutical antibiotics, including streptomycin, penicillin, neomycin and tetracycline; the combined products act synergistically.21 For treating existing internal infections, propolis can be taken in conjunction with prescribed medications but not in place of them. For acute infections, customers can take four to eight 400600-mg capsules daily for two weeks.

Propolis is also a superior ingredient in wound salves and may help heal stomach ulcers. One tablespoon raw honey with propolis three times daily during an ulcer flare-up can be helpful. In addition to being antimicrobial, propolis is anti-inflammatory and detoxifying, and it stimulates new tissue growth.18

References

Markham KR, Campos M. 7- and 8-o-methylherbacetin-3-o- sophorosides from bee pollens and some structure/activity observations. It’s darn near impossible to avoid.

The same goes for bees. As tens of thousands of bees traipse in and out of the hive each day, they pick up germs along the way and take them back to the colony. Thanks to a sticky brown substance called propolis, however, bees keep the insides of their hives germ-free.

Bee propolis is the resin that bees collect from the buds and wounds of trees and other plants and mix with beeswax. In warm weather, propolis is sticky and soft and can be used to fill holes or spread over surfaces like a shellac. In cool weather, the propolis hardens and becomes brittle. The bees use it to caulk, seal, line, and strengthen the hive, but they also use it to ward off contamination and germs in the hive. That’s because propolis, also known as Russian penicillin, has antibacterial properties.

It’s this ability to fight bacteria that makes it an intriguing supplement for humans. The use of propolis as medicine dates back to the time of Aristotle, about 350 b.c.

The Greeks used propolis for abscesses, while the Assyrians used it to heal wounds and tumors, according to Steve Nenninger, N.D., a naturopathic doctor in New York City.

The Egyptians used it for mummification—and so do bees, says Theodore Cherbuliez, M.D., a physician in Scarsdale, New York, and president of the American Apitherapy Society, a nonprofit organization that advances the investigation of the healing use of products from the beehive. If a mouse crawls into the hive for warmth in the winter, bees will sting it to death. Then, since they can’t physically remove the mouse, they will mummify it with propolis to protect the health of the hive. "Imagine the inside of a beehive, says Dr. Cherbuliez. "It’s hot, humid, and an ideal milieu to grow bacteria on that dead mouse. Propolis prevents this from happening."

Proponents today use propolis to treat a variety of illnesses, including colds, flu, and sore throats; skin problems; wounds and bruises; stomach ulcers; burns; hemorrhoids; gum disease; high blood pressure; bad breath; and tonsillitis. They also promote it for boosting immunity. But even the strongest supporters rely on stories of healing, rather than on statistical studies, when they claim that it’s a nutritional supplement. No carefully controlled studies exist to back these claims.

Stoked-Up Sticky Stuff
There are more than 300 components in propolis, including bio flavonoids, says Dr. Cherbuliez. Because propolis comes from a variety of plants, the amount and type of these components can vary by season and region.

Collecting propolis for human use is an arduous task. To get the purest product, beekeepers place small inserts into the hives. To bees, the inserts look like cracks. Thinking that their hive needs repair, the bees fill the inserts with propolis. Propolis can also be scraped out of the hive, but this yields an inferior product that may contain unwanted by-products.

Bee propolis is available in tablets, throat lozenges, chewable tablets with vitamin C, cough syrup, toothpaste, mouthwash, skin lotions, lipstick, throat spray, salve, and tincture. It’s best to buy propolis from a supplement manufacturer that specializes in bee products.

Content source:
http://www.mothernature.com/Library/Bookshelf/Books/23/10.cfm

http://www.destination360.com/north-america/us/hawaii/oahu/oahu-nature-tours.php

Juandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13996393031641325156noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2994244242615338587.post-45388579206319379852008-07-15T08:53:00.000-07:002008-07-15T09:13:35.533-07:00A Natural Treatment for cases of Fungi, Bacteria, Yeasts and ParasitesIn scientific tests on fungi and bacteria, propolis again proves its exceptional qualities. Studies by Dr J.M. Grange of the National Heart and Lung Institute (U.K.) were published in The Royal Society of Medicine magazine (March 1990)

"Propolis was found to have antibacterial activity against a range of commonly encountered cocci and gram positive bacteria including human tubercle bacillus.... These findings confirm previous reports of anti-microbial properties of this material, possibly attributable to its high flavenoid content".

Dr Remy Chavin reported: "No other antibiotic has this total result on bacteria". Propolis raises the body's natural resistance to infection by stimulating its own immune system.

Its anti-microbial properties are not confined to bacteria. Both in vitro and in vivo tests (laboratory cultures and tests on animals and humans) have shown propolis to be excellent at inhibiting the growth of many varieties of yeast including the common human parasite Candida Albicans (thought to be the common factor in most chronic immune disorders). Direct comparisons with nine (more narrow band) anti-fungal drugs on four specific fungi showed propolis to be equal to or better than them in its inhibitory effects. In short, propolis is an effective anti-fungal, anti-candidal agent that does not lose its effect with long term use. 3'4

Ingredients of propolis
About 50% of propolis is a resin, 30% waxes, 10% essential oils, 5%. Pollen, also vitamins, minerals, bioflavenoids and flavenols, plus the bees' own secretions. The actual chemical composition is exceptionally complex and still being unfolded by laboratories around the world. At present it is generally assayed by its flavenoid content. Since the proportions of the various ingredients vary so much from hive to hive it is important to obtain a propolis that has been blended from many hives and then assayed.

Propolis mainly comes as an extract - either hot water or hot alcohol extract. It is then dried and sold as a concentrate. The water extract is cheaper and much in general use, but many of the chemical trials have been done on the alcohol extract. Since these two types of extract contain some different ingredients it is therefore wise to obtain the full balanced profile of a raw propolis to provide a mixture of the two types of extract.

Dose
Propolis has had its reputation tarnished by some suppliers providing sub-optimal amounts -as little as 10 milligrams per capsule/tablet. The general consensus is that an effective daily dose is around 1.5gms of the raw Propolis i.e. 375 milligrams of a four times concentrate. This was the quantity used in the M.E. trial discussed with persons relapsing when reducing to half gm daily. Russian doctors have used 9gms daily of raw propolis for periods after surgery with no apparent side effects. For long-term use it is recommended to experiment with dose using the 1.5gms as a guide. We all have differing needs at different times.

Content source:
http://www.regenerativenutrition.com/content.asp?id=66

http://www.eau21.ch/images/photos%20raphaele/bacteries_G.JPG
Juandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13996393031641325156noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2994244242615338587.post-88773564069461899642008-07-15T08:37:00.000-07:002008-07-15T08:49:24.725-07:00Long Term Effects of PropolisMore relevant than the external (in vitro) tests are the long term effects of propolis consumption. Being an extremely complex biochemical compound (trees must be very clever!) it is broad spectrum in its effects. Unlike synthetic antibiotics, beneficial bacteria essential for human survival and health are not eliminated or compromised by propolis. Maintaining our friendly bacteria (of which there are several kilos in our gut!) is essential for proper nutrient assimilation and for the immune system.

By taking propolis we can build up our resistance to colds, flu and other infections, but even if we leave it until we become infected, propolis is able to mitigate the worst effects of the infection (especially protecting the lungs).

Dr Bert Hausteen from Kiel University in Germany, who has spent years researching propolis, says the bioflavonoids in propolis help to keep viruses inactive.

A practical example comes from David Lloyd Williams, aged 72, of Powys, Wales who says: "For many years I suffered heavy colds, flu and bronchitis and antibiotics no longer seemed to help my chest problems... I took two capsules of propolis daily and within weeks my chest started to clear. I have only suffered one cold in the last 12 months and my bronchitis has completely cleared".

Many other persons have found help with chest conditions, e.g. asthma and bronchitis. In vitro studies have found propolis effective against TB germs5 that are now becoming resistant to conventional synthetic antibiotic treatment. Brent Harvey, a 28 year old that suffered from asthma since he was seven years old. After only four days of taking propolis he gained a full night's sleep without asthma for the first time in many, many months.

The effects of Propolis extend far beyond the 'protection from invasion' role. Propolis is a significant aid to circulatory health. This is partly due to the presence of bioflavenoids (including the most potent of all O.P.C. - see the article on "Grape Seed O.P.C. Nature's most Potent Anti-Oxidant"). Chinese researchers have found Propolis effective in treating hypertension, arteriosclerosis and coronary heart disease. Bulgarian studies have shown good results in lowering high blood pressure. Understanding of the full role of the anti-oxidant and free radical scavenging effects of propolis will help us fathom some of the benefits of propolis.

Most health disorders, especially those that come on with age, are in part due to free-radical damage, and it seems reasonable at this stage of knowledge to attribute the presence of anti-oxidant factors in propolis (i.e. the bioflavenoid content especially the O.P.C. fraction) as being responsible for many of the health benefits of propolis.

Propolis has many natural healing properties; it aids the regeneration of bone, flesh and dental pulp. It has a long history of use for skin disorders such as eczema. Many studies have shown (e.g. in U.S.A., Poland and Russia) the beneficial effects of Propolis on a whole variety of other conditions, including fungal infections, psoriasis, dermatitis and acne. One test involved 59 patients who still had acne after several years of antibiotics, Dr Landon reports (using propolis ointment and tincture) that all patients were healed in one to three weeks; this was with acne simplex and acne pustulosa respectively. An example of eczema treatment was on a 15 month old Gregory Sheffield - his eczema disappeared after two applications of propolis cream over 48 hours.

TB, asthma, eczema and hay fever are all related disorders according to homeopathic teachings. In view of this it is perhaps not so surprising that hay fever may respond positively to the use of propolis. Three patients are reported to have responded very favourably within eight days.

Propolis also has anti-inflammatory properties. This, combined with its healing and immune balancing effects, may explain why it is also successful in alleviating rheumatism and arthritis in some individuals. (These disorders are so multi-causal that other treatments may also be required).

Further indications that it encourages healthy cell growth are shown in the experience of some persons who report stronger nails and thicker hair after taking propolis.

Propolis' action on the immune system and general well-being extends itself to so-called auto immune disorders. Studies at Oxford University have implicated propolis as being useful in the treatment of multiple sclerosis. (This is thought to be due to part of the body's defences attacking the nerve insulation sheaths). Rheumatoid arthritis is also thought to be an auto-immune disorder, yet both types of arthritis have been eased with propolis10.

M.E. (chronic fatigue syndrome) is a difficult condition to resolve and seems to display a disordered immune system, one half being underactive and the other half being overactive. Propolis does not seem to respect this difficulty! A trial was conducted on 27 patients who were chronically ill. After four months 24 had obtained major benefit. Some had responded dramatically within one week11 (this rapid effect has been also reported with O.P.C.), others more slowly. (Studies have shown linseed oil and evening primrose oil would be a complementary remedy for M.E. sufferers).

Propolis may also have a use in cancer prevention and treatment. Several studies have shown Propolis and its extracts inhibit the growth of cancer cells. In 1988 Cancer Researchers at Columbia University identified one of the active ingredients of Propolis, synthesised it and used it to either slow or completely stop the growth of a range of different types of cancer cells.

It is unlikely that we will ever see Propolis supplied by our Health Service or prescribed by our GP since there is no significant money to be made from it. It is only by isolating and extracting particular chemicals from nature's complex products that a drug patent can be issued. Such a drug can reap rich rewards!

Ironically, the rich diversity of the chemical structure of herb's and other natural remedies such as propolis will always have a superior effect on the totality of health of any individual than a single extracted substance (patented drug).

Content source:
http://www.regenerativenutrition.com/content.asp?id=66

http://blog.makezine.com/life_clock2.jpg

Juandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13996393031641325156noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2994244242615338587.post-64414351540506214702008-06-27T03:32:00.000-07:002008-06-27T03:58:33.131-07:00The Most Natural Antibiotic
It is said that Propolis is the most natural antibiotic man has ever discovered. The remarkable thing about this statement is the fact that this discovery took place some 2000 years ago. A lot of people probably haven't even heard about Propolis, and yet, ancient herbal books prescribed Propolis for numerous complaints. The bactericidal qualities of this medicine have been known since the beginning of written history.

History
The use of Propolis in popular medicine goes back all the way to ancient times. Egyptians, Greeks and Romans reported the use of Propolis for its general healing qualities and for the cure of some lesions of the skin. Since the 12th century in Europe, folk remedy has attributed an important place to Propolis for certain preparations for external use. However, it has only been in the last twenty years that scientists have been able to prove that Propolis is as active and important as our forefathers thought.

Recognized by science
Propolis is now considered an important part of dietetics and a natural cure by the World Health Organization. Its popularity is ever increasing, due to its many possibilities. The concentrations of flavonoids seem to be responsible for the great antibiotic effects of Propolis. Flavonoids possess many potent curative effects. Forty-one of these substances have been recognized by science.

What does it do
Flavonoids stimulate hair growth, and improve the circulation of the blood. They also stimulate elimination of urine, bile secretion, and endocrine secretion. It is a well known fact that endocrine secretion, from places such as the thymus, the thyroid gland, the pancreas and the adrenals has a beneficial effect on the organism in general. Flavonoids are not only antibacterial substances, they are also active for the treatment of ulcers, rheumatism, flu and cold syndromes, irritated stomachs and certain breathing problems.

The same products are also beneficial for some chronic ailments, such as stress and joint problems. This gives an extra dimension to the performance of the product. Propolis, by nature, gives us a most powerful and versatile complement to supplement our food intake. All over the world, physicians have been astonished by the power of Propolis. We are only at the beginning of the story because the healing possibilities of Propolis seem to be unlimited.

Origin of Propolis
Our honeybees collect resins as a basic material on the buds of poplars, birches, pine trees etc. After the resin is chewed by the honeybee, and with the addition of saliva, other substances are formed. The finished product is called Propolis. Propolis is of vital importance for the survival of the bees. Not only does it protect them against diseases, but also against climatic changes, such as wind and cold.

Propolis consists of more than 100 substances

Propolis is composed of 50-55% resin and balms, 30% wax, 5% fixed substances such as clump, greases, amino acids, organic acids, composed ethers of alcohol, elements of spores and microelements such as iron, copper manganese, zinc, aminocids, phytoncides, and antibiotics, plus a high content of vitamins B,E,C,H and P, as well as pro-vitamin A. The flavonoids and phenolic acids rich resins makes around 40 % to 50 % of propolis.

Scientifically, studies done on propolis have found that propolis actually consists of more than 150 chemical components.

Because propolis comes from a variety of plants, availability of the plants sap and the type of bees, no two propolis are alike. It would be different in term of color, odor and composition. Some researches even reported finding as much as 300 components in their sample propolis.

Chemical Ingredients:

Chemically, propolis is exceedingly complex. Flavonoids are abundant in propolis. Apart from that you will also find kaempferol, apigenin, pinocembrin, galangin, luteolin, pinostrobin and quercitin - all of which are anti-inflammatory, antiallergenic, antioxidant and/or antimutagenic.

Propolis is also rich in the caffeic acid phenethyl ester. This is a substance that was shown to inhibited cancer growth and reduced inflammation in studies done to animals.

Bee propolis also contains organic acids and their derivatives as well as terpenoids. These constituents contribute to it's antibiotic, anti fungal and antiviral effects.

About Propolis Antibacterial and Antiviral Effects
There is an interesting difference between propolis's antibacterial property compared to an antibiotics.

Antibiotics work by killing bacteria in our body, That includes those "friendly" ones needed by the body. Among the friendly bacteria killed by antibiotics are bacteria responsible in helping the body produce vitamins like B and K. The more antibiotics you use, the more "friendly" bacteria will you kill.

On the other hand, propolis raise the body's natural resistance by stimulating one's own immune system. It will also add certain vitamin like B1, B, C, E and essential minerals including iron, aluminum, manganese and silicon to the body.

Thus, scientist have tried to combine antibiotics and propolis to get the best of both worlds. They found that addition of propolis to antibiotics increases the effect of the drug from 10 to 100 folds.

Content and image source:
http://www.beepropolis.info

Juandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13996393031641325156noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2994244242615338587.post-58675853072696597442008-06-02T00:10:00.001-07:002008-06-02T00:20:04.716-07:00Bee Propolis BenefitsAll about bee propolis benefits……

Bee Propolis Benefits
Bee Propolis - often referred to as "bee glue" is a popular health product in Europe and it's climbing the supplemental charts in North America as it is becoming better known.

Considered one of nature's miracles, propolis is the resinous substance that bees gather from the leaf buds and bark of trees, especially poplar and conifer trees. Once collected, the bees transport the propolis back to their hives, where they are met by other colleagues (worker bees) to help them unload this precious substance. Once unloaded, the worker bees add salivary secretions and wax flakes, then spread the finished product throughout the beehive walls where they construct and maintain their hives. Hence the name - "bee glue."

However, propolis does more than glue the walls together and maintains the beehive. Researchers discovered that it prevents disease in the colony by inhibiting the growth of fungi, viruses, bacteria and other microbes. In fact, some Naturopaths point out that it is one of the most powerful topical antimicrobial agents humans can use.

Bee Propolis Benefits

How can it benefit you?
Propolis contains protein, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and flavonoids. As such, some people take bee propolis as a general nutritional health supplement for optimal health.

It appears that bee propolis harbors both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. It has been used in the past internally to combat bacterial, fungal, parasitic, and viral infections like tuberculosis, candidiasis, malaria, and colds.

In Europe, bee propolis is commonly used for the treatment of peptic ulcers and ulcerative colitis. It is thought to have a healing effect on internal digestive organs, including the stomach and intestines because the flavonoids harbor anti-inflammatory properties.

Other Possible Bee Propolis Benefits:
1. Infections – It is believed that its antimicrobial effects can defend the body against bacteria, fungus, viruses, and parasites.

2. Wound Healing – Good results have been reported on the use of this product on burns, surgical wounds, and other topical wounds. (Applied topically.)

3. Antioxidants- The flavonoids act as antioxidants.

4. Herpes – A study found that an ointment made of propolis is able to heal genital herpetic lesions.

5. Immune System- Enhances the immune system

6. Liver Health- A few laboratory studies found that propolis may have positive effects on the liver by protecting it from alcohol or environmental toxins.

7. Dental Conditions – Holds promise for dental conditions like gingivitis, mouth ulcers, and periodontal disease.

Precautions and Propolis Side Effects
Now that we've discussed bee propolis benefits, let's go over side effects and precautions ….

If you are allergic to bee pollen, honey, conifer trees, or poplar trees, it is not recommended that you use this product.

Allergic reactions include wheezing, headache, itchy throat, hives, or skin flushing. Discontinue use immediately if these symptoms develop.

Severe allergic reactions are possible and can be very serious, requiring immediate emergency medical attention. This includes anaphylactic shock, which can be fatal. In fact, discontinue use right away if you develop any side effects after taking a bee product.

If you have asthma or an allergy to bee stings exercise extreme caution in taking any bee products.

Propolis is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women because there is not enough information in this area.

Tips on Choosing a Bee Propolis Supplement
To maximize your bee propolis benefits we recommend the following:

Select a supplement that is formulated by a company that follows strict GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) compliance. Why? Because dietary supplements are not strictly regulated in the U.S. and, as such, manufacturers do not have to guarantee the safety, effectiveness, or even the true content of their products. The result is that you, as the consumer only have a 1 in 5 chance of buying a product that contains what is stated on the label or one that does not harbor harmful contaminates!

Facilities that are GMP compliant adhere to stringent regulatory standards.

Select a supplement that does not contain any fillers or additives such as sucrose (sugar), starch, gluten, silica (sand) or any other artificial colors, dyes, or flavors.

Contact the manufacture and inquire if they have a Certificate of Analysis (COA) on file, confirming the potency of each batch.
